Diary, 1861-1864, describes services with the Army of the Potomac, II Corps, during the Peninsular, Chancellorsville and Gettysburg campaigns and later battles of Mine Run, Spotsylvania, North Anna River, Totopotomoy Creek and Cold Harbor. Account is most ofter concerned with daily army life, but there is some reporting of the battles.

The Army of the Potomac was created after the defeat of Union forces at the First Battle of Bull Run. Its objective was to defend Washington, D.C. by protecting the Potomac River entry into the city.
